July 4th weekend I was invited to join a group to go whitewater rafting in Maine. Helllz yah! For some reason, I’ve been an adrenaline monkey lately. This trip will be followed by six flags and then sky diving and hopefully another rafting trip at a class IV/V river. Anyways, it was Maine I was headed to and in my mind Maine = Food = Lobsters! I charted out food along our route and our first stop was J’s Oyster in Portland, Maine. Of course we had to start with some raw oyster and these were fresh, extremely fresh. Everything in this post was probably harvested that same morning. They could have done a better job at cleaning the oysters out however.

Lobster stuffed oysters?! WHAT? woah… had to try it, but unfortunately it was forgettable. Too much breading, too little lobster for these small-ish oysters. Stick with the raw ones.

Here was the main entree. $15 for a steamed 1.5lb lobster, salad and corn! What a deal. This was my first time in Maine and I had high expectations for the seafood. Well, bingo. This was the real deal. Perfectly cooked, super sweet and tender, this was the perfect lobster. What made it even better was that the shell was thin and soft. These lobster are shedders, which mean then grow new exo-skeletons. This made it super easy to crack them open and eat.

Had to try the lobster roll also. For $12, I was pleasantly surprised at how much lobster they served up. I was a bit bummed that the roll was a simple hot dog bun and that there was no mayo sauce mixed into the lobster to help hold it together. For $3 more, I would have ordered a second steamed lobster. Either way, 3 hours into our drive towards Maine, this was already our second meal. Life was good.

Afterward, we walked to a local lobster store and bought four..that’s right FOUR! 2lb live lobsters to cook two hrs later for dinner. Oh the glory!
